Services

Health Checks
Regular check-ups are essential to ensure your pet’s on-going good health. During a health check, your pet receives a full physical examination. This includes checking your pet’s mouth (including the teeth), eyes and ears, listening to the heart and lungs, palpating the abdomen and examining the skin, coat and legs. Additional services can be provided if required, including: anal sac expression, nail trim, vaccination, worming, and microchip scanning.

Vaccination
There are many different vaccinations available today. Our vets will tailor a vaccine regime to your pet’s individual requirements. For dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets, vaccination protects your pet from serious infectious diseases. Most vaccinations require an annual booster to maintain protection, but there are now some canine diseases that we only need to vaccinate for every 3 years. Please contact us for more information.

Pathology
Here at Macquarie Animal Hospital, we provide a complete range of pathology services, utilising both in-house testing and outside laboratory services.

Radiology
We have an in-house x-ray machine and digital processor. This ensures your pet’s radiographs can be produced quickly and with minimal stress to your pet. Digital processing produces high quality radiographs, thus enabling detailed examination of your pet’s skeleton and soft tissues.  It allows us to magnify or enhance the detail of areas of concern, and to examine your pet in greater detail and discover small and subtle changes that may be very difficult to detect using older systems.

Ultrasonography
We have a sophisticated ultrasound machine on-site. This allows us to examine the soft tissues including the abdomen and heart in great detail. Ultrasound allows us to examine organs in 3 dimensions.  It also allows us to perform echocardiography and fully examine heart function, as well as structure.

Intensive Care and Hospitalisation
We are passionate about providing a high standard of hospitalisation and care.  Our approach is personal and compassionate.  We understand the anxiety associated with leaving your beloved pet in our hands, particularly when they are sick or injured.  Our vets and nurses provide constant care and strive to give our patients a warm, comfortable, pain and stress free hospital stay. This allows your pet to have the fastest possible recovery.

Micro-chipping
All dogs and cats sold or rehomed in Tasmania are required to be microchipped. Dogs also need to be registered with your local council and this cannot be done without a microchip being implanted. We inject a small capsule under the skin over your pet’s shoulders. Every chip has a unique number which can be read by a microchip scanner. We will register this code with an Australia-wide database, so if your pet gets lost you have the best chance of being reunited. While dogs and cats need to be microchipped, other pets such as ferrets, birds and rabbits can also be microchipped in case they get lost. In our practice, we have had several pocket pets re-united with their loving family through the use of microchips.

House Calls and Pick Ups
We will happily come to your house for simple procedures or to provide an initial assessment of unwell animals. If a home visit is not feasible or you just require assistance to get your pet to the hospital, we are also able to provide a pick-up service.

If you would like to book a house call or pick-up, or you would like an estimate of cost, please contact us.

Small furry pets, birds and exotics
Our vets and nurses have extensive experience with these animals and love having them as patients. They have personally kept Tortoises, Galahs, Rabbits, Ferrets, Guinea Pigs, Chickens, Frogs, Fish, Lizards, Stick Insects, Giant Cockroaches, Budgerigars and more! So no matter what your beloved pet is, we would love to meet them.  They will be welcome here and we can provide everything from basic health checks, all the way through to surgery and long term treatment for chronic disease.
